Mountain goats are a common sight in Alaska’s mountainous regions, including the Chugach Mountains and the Kenai Peninsula. These hardy animals are known for their incredible climbing abilities and are often seen scaling steep cliffs and rocky ledges. They are typically white or cream-colored and have shaggy coats that help protect them from the cold and wind. Mountain goats are herbivores and primarily feed on grasses, sedges, and other alpine vegetation. During the breeding season, males will compete for mating rights with elaborate displays of dominance and aggression. While they are generally not aggressive towards humans, it is important to give mountain goats plenty of space and avoid disturbing their natural habitat.
