Dall sheep are one of the most iconic and fascinating animals in Alaska. They are found in the mountainous regions of the state, including the Brooks Range, Alaska Range, and the Chugach Mountains. Dall sheep are known for their impressive climbing abilities. They are often seen scaling steep cliffs and rocky ledges with ease. They are typically white or cream-colored and have distinctive curved horns that can grow up to three feet in length. Dall sheep are herbivores and primarily feed on grasses, sedges, and other alpine vegetation. During the breeding season, males will compete for mating rights with elaborate displays of dominance and aggression. While they are not typically aggressive towards humans, it is important to give Dall sheep plenty of space and avoid disturbing their natural habitat.
