Gold was first discovered in the Coldfoot area in 1898–1899, drawing a rush of around 2,000 prospectors seeking placer deposits along Slate, Myrtle, Boulder, and nearby creeks feeding the Middle Fork of the Koyukuk River. By 1902, Coldfoot had developed into a bustling boomtown with two roadhouses, two general stores, seven saloons, a gambling house, and a post office that operated from 1902 to 1912.  Although mining operations were modest in scale, Coldfoot served as a vital staging point and supply base during its brief gold rush era. Its legacy lives on today as a remote outpost along the Dalton Highway at milepost 175, no longer a mining camp, but a service stop and visitor hub just north of the Arctic Circle.
