Mammoth Ivory Handle Ulu Style Pocket Knife

This mammoth ivory handle Ulu style pocket knife is about 2 3/4″ long when folded and just over 4 1/2 when open. Fossil mammoth ivory makes up the handle, and it is a beautiful and highly durable material found in Alaska. Alaskan knife maker, Bob Merry, designed and made the knife here in Anchorage.

Bob and his family have been carving and making knives in Alaska for over 30 years. Each year, Bob spends a month or more in the Arctic wilderness. He collects naturally shed antler for his knife handles and carvings. Additionally, he gets mammoth bone from miners, and artifacts along with other materials from hunters that find them while in the back country.

Indigenous peoples of Alaska, including the Inupiaq, Yupik, and Iñupiat, have used the ulu for centuries, with a history dating back over a thousand years. It was a fundamental tool for their subsistence lifestyle in the Arctic region. While ulus have historical roots, they are still used in Alaska today. Both for traditional purposes within indigenous communities and by people who appreciate their effectiveness in the kitchen. The ulu’s ergonomic design makes it a popular tool for slicing and food preparation.
