The 40 Mile district in Alaska has a rich history of gold mining that dates back to the late 1800s. In fact, in 1886, people made the first gold discovery in the area. Within a few years, miners had established several small-scale mining operations in the region. In the early 1900s, larger mining companies began to move into the area, and by the 1920s, the 40 Mile district had become one of the largest gold-producing regions in Alaska. Today, the district continues to be an important area for small-scale gold mining, with several recreational mining operations still in operation. The district is also home to several historic gold mining sites, including the historic town of Chicken, which was founded during the gold rush of the early 1900s.
