Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, made history in 2008 when he became the first African American elected to the presidency. Born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was raised by his mother and grandparents and later studied at Columbia University before earning a law degree from Harvard Law School, where he became the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, taught constitutional law, and served in the Illinois State Senate before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. His inspiring message of “hope and change” propelled him to the presidency, where he served two terms (2009–2017). His major achievements included the Affordable Care Act, the economic stimulus package to counter the Great Recession, ordering the mission that killed Osama bin Laden, and expanding environmental protections. After leaving office, Obama has remained active in public life through the Obama Foundation, writing, and global advocacy.
