Sourdough & Moose Medallion

We were inspired to design this medallion from a photograph taken over 100 years ago showing a prospector in the Yukon sitting on the back of a bull moose that he had trained for riding.

The domestication of moose, while a concept with historical precedent, remains largely experimental and impractical in modern times. Moose are formidable and wild animals, challenging to domesticate due to their size, temperament, and specialized needs. Historically, some Indigenous peoples in northern regions may have semi-domesticated moose for purposes such as transportation, but this relationship was more akin to taming than full domestication. Efforts to domesticate moose in contemporary settings have been limited and typically unsuccessful due to their complex social behavior, specific dietary requirements, and the lack of selective breeding programs to tame their wild instincts. While the idea of domesticated moose may intrigue some, the practical challenges and ethical considerations make it a largely unexplored frontier in animal husbandry.

This medallion features a magnificent bull moose in an Alaskan landscape. This medallion is available in golden bronze, 1 oz .999 fine silver, 1 oz single gold relief (24k plating on the front of the silver coin) and 1 oz double gold relief (24k gold plating on both sides). It is similar in size to a silver dollar and comes packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse features our popular “Land of the Midnight Sun” design.
