Every week, miners come in to our shop with the gold that they have found in different parts of Alaska and Northern Canada. We purchase some of this gold to make into jewelry or sell as specimen pieces to collectors around the world. The smaller flake gold we call dust, is the most commonly found and is available for the lowest price per ounce. It is then cleaned, packaged in a glass vial and a “gold poke” pouch. Natural gold has other metals mixed with it, including silver and platinum. Most of our gold is between 70% to 95% pure. Our nuggets are weighed in pennyweight (DWT) 1 pennyweight equals 1.55 grams, 20 pennyweights equal 1 troy ounce. We negotiate with the miners to get the best price possible, but because of their rarity, natural nuggets sell for more than the market price of gold, in fact, the larger the nugget, the more per ounce it can cost.
