It is unknown when the first sled dog race was held. Humans have domesticated dogs for thousands of years, and sled dogs have been used for transportation in Arctic areas for almost as long. The first sled dog race to feature a codified set of rules was the All Alaska Sweepstakes which first took place in 1908. Our medallion features a long distance dog team running around the outer edge of the coin with a map of Alaska and Totemic pattern inside.
This medallion is minted in golden bronze, 1 oz .999 fine silver, 1 oz single gold relief (24k plating on the front of the silver coin) and 1 oz double gold relief (24k gold plating on both sides). The 1 oz medallion is similar in size to a silver dollar. They are packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse features our popular “Land of the Midnight Sun” design.
