A rare white raven was spotted in Anchorage in 2023, capturing the attention of wildlife enthusiasts and locals alike. Unlike typical ravens, this bird’s striking white feathers are due to leucism, a genetic condition that reduces pigmentation. White ravens are extremely uncommon and are often considered symbols of mystery or magic. The sighting has sparked fascination and awe, as these birds are rarely seen in the wild, making it a unique and memorable event for the Anchorage community. The white raven even has its own Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1046547649701153/
Ravens have long wedged shaped tails. They are not just large but massive birds with a thick neck, shaggy throat feathers, and a Bowie knife of a beak. They weigh 1.5 to 3.5 pounds, are 22-27 inches long and have a wingspan of 42-46 inches. Ravens are confident, inquisitive birds that strut around or occasionally bound forward with light, two-footed hops. In flight they are buoyant and graceful, interspersing soaring, gliding and slow flaps. They are completely black from their feathers to their claws, beaks and eyes.
Ravens are a significant part of Alaska Native culture, and are featured in many myths, stories, and legends. Many Alaska Native groups, including the Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Bella Bella, and Kwakiutl, believe the raven created the world and brought daylight.
Ravens are known as tricksters who can shift between bird, man, and spirit forms. They are known for their mischievous nature and are said to have caused trouble for humans.
Ravens are also known as the “keeper of secrets” who help people by exposing the truth of secrets that could harm them.
Many stories tell of the raven’s adventures, including how he used trickery or force to obtain what he wanted. For example, one well-known legend tells of the raven stealing the sun and releasing it into the sky.
