Sea lions are a common sight along Alaska’s rugged coastline. These large marine mammals, which are closely related to seals, can weigh up to 1,000 kg. They are known for their loud barking calls and distinctive ear flaps. Two species of sea lions can be found in Alaska: the Steller sea lion and the California sea lion. Steller sea lions are the largest species of sea lion and are considered an important apex predator in Alaska’s marine ecosystem. They feed on fish and other marine mammals. California sea lions, on the other hand, are more commonly found in warmer waters but can be seen in Alaska during the summer months. Sea lions are a popular attraction for visitors to Alaska.
