Wolves are one of the most iconic and controversial animals in Alaska. They are highly intelligent and social creatures that live in packs and are known for their eerie howling. In Alaska, wolves are found throughout the state, from the boreal forests to the tundra regions. They primarily feed on large mammals, such as caribou, moose, and deer, and play an important role in the state’s ecosystem by helping to control populations of these prey species. However, wolves have also been the subject of controversy due to conflicts with human activities such as hunting and trapping, as well as their impact on domestic livestock. Despite their reputation as fierce predators, wolves are generally shy and will avoid humans if possible. It is important for visitors in Alaska to respect wolves’ wild nature and give them plenty of space if they encounter them in the wild.

This medallion features a winter scene of northern lights above a pack of wolves. It is minted in golden bronze, 1 oz .999 fine silver, 1 oz single gold relief (24k plating on the front of the silver coin) and 1 oz double gold relief (24k gold plating on both sides). It is similar in size to a silver dollar and comes packaged in an airtight container and handsome gift box. The reverse features our popular “Land of the Midnight Sun” design.
