Natural Gold Nugget Specs

This beautiful 7.2 gram natural gold nugget was found near the town of Chicken, Alaska by the Canadian border. The old timers wanted to call it Ptarmigan, but nobody new how to spell that so they decided on “Chicken”.  It is just about 3/4″ long and about 1/2″ wide, it weighs 4.7 dwt / 7.2 grams.

Chicken, Alaska is located near the historic Fortymile Mining District. The district has a rich history of gold mining dating back to the late 1800s. In fact, the first discovery of gold in the area was made in 1886! By the early 1900s, the Fortymile Mining District had become one of the largest gold-producing regions in Alaska. The town of Chicken itself was founded during the gold rush of the early 1900s which quickly grew into a thriving mining community. Today, the mining industry in the area has largely shifted to small-scale operations. For instance, miners are using methods such as panning and sluicing to extract gold. Nonetheless, the legacy of gold mining remains an important part of Chicken’s history and identity. Thus, the town continues to be a popular destination for tourists who come to explore the historic mining sites and learn about the region’s rich mining heritage.
